The US consumes more electricity than any other nation. And with all the issues our world is facing right now with pollution and the depletion of our ozone layer, we need to help economize electricity, which in turn will assist our environment. William Gilbert, Michael Faraday, and George Westinghouse were some of the historical individuals that got curious enough to explore the possibilities with electricity. Find out exactly what events happened this day in history. Discover more events and facts that occurred in history.
In this article, we are going to talk about a couple of things that we all can do to not only save electricity but save some money in the process. These are very simple things that anyone can do, you just have to make the choice to do them in order to help the Earth and ourselves.
The first thing you can do is to simply turn off the lights each time you leave the room. Many of us probably temporarily leave the living room lights turned on when we visit the kitchen to get a snack because we think we are returning soon. If you do this for only a few times a day, it could add up to no less than thirty minutes of consumed electrical energy. Even if 30 minutes doesn’t appear like much, keep in mind that millions upon millions of people do this each day. If you combine the minutes for the year, that would be more or less 182 hours of electrical energy just for one light in one room for every individual that does this. Next try to multiply that by just 1 million souls. That’s 182 million hours of electricity consumed annually coming from a light that is left on in a single room. Aside from leaving the lights turned on when exiting a room, a lot of us switch the lights on when going inside a room. This has become second nature to many people. I catch myself doing the exact same thing also. The trouble is that even during daytime when you don’t need the light since you’re getting more than enough sunlight to light up the room. But most people still come into a room and turn the lights on. And in addition to that, because of the natural light filtering in, we tend to forget we turned the room light on in the first place and leave it on for the rest of the day. You simply have to make the extra effort to not turn the lights on if there is sufficient natural light coming in.
People who leave their televisions and radios turned on the whole day, when they are not even in the same room is one of the worst problems. When I visit my mother, I have to remind her to turn the television off as she would leave it running even though she’s not watching. This is a huge waste of electrical power. So, if you are not watching the television, only turn it off. Did you know that on January 11, 1949 the first ‘networked’ TV broadcast took place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania? For some other days and historical events go to today in history September 8. More facts, figures, and events!
These are just a couple of things that people can do very easily but can have a big impact on our efforts to conserve power and to save the environment. If everyone makes just a little effort to do these very simple things, it can add up to make a huge difference.
