There’s been a substantial move in recent years to re-emphasize using the traditional language in order to also pass on the unique and diversified tradition of ancient Hawaii in the schools.
On the Big Island is found the world’s tallest mountain, Mauna Kea. Although it is recognized worldwide as being just 13,796 feet, the true elevation if measured from it’s base about 20,000 feet beneath the ocean, is notably different. In fact, at an over-all 33,500 feet it is taller than Mt. Everest. Very impressive!
Hawaii’s warm climate is enjoyed all year round with the lowest temperatures approaching just 60 degrees. Trade winds will blow across the islands resulting in a significantly decreased humidity compared to many other temparate climates. The islands also have basically two distinctive seasons, dry and wet. Dry season is from April to October and the wet time of year is from November to March.
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, with airplanes and submarines, sinking or destroying numerous Navy warships and taking some 2400 lives. You can tour and explore the exact site and even see a number of the old ships still there to this day.
Important towns in the islands include Honolulu, Kalaoa, Numila, Puhi, Maalaea, Kukuihaele, Nawiliwili and Haena. Each possess their own individual experience for travellers, but it would take more than one vacation to take it all in.
